His Sufficient Grace

By Brandi Hignight

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

I lament:
Abortion – Why is it so socially acceptable? How long, Lord?!
Divorce – So rampant. How long?!
ISIS – Seemingly growing, undeterred. Where are You?!

What can I do, I wonder, in my small sphere? What can I do?!

I find myself overwhelmed! Too many needs, hurts, wounds. Even after the divorce is final and the baby is aborted. That is the insidious part. So commonplace we don’t even think about it. “Nothing to see here, just move along.” But that is a lie. A lie by omission.

I couldn’t sleep last night. I slept very restlessly. I was thinking of Moses, Gideon, and Abraham. It is easy for me to look at them and say, “God has called you/instructed you. What’s your problem?!” But you know what? Maybe Moses  wasn’t a good speaker. Gideon did come from the WEAKEST tribe. Abraham was old. Sarah was barren. Mary was a virgin. And?!

I really DO have MS and it really does have physical implications for me (for us). I AM struck with fear when applying for a new job, in wanting to trust Him, in being obedient.

In this light, their reasons ring more true and seem less like excuses.

Then my reading led me to this verse. Not what I was expecting, yet just what I needed to hear. His word is applicable in every circumstance.

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

Am I surprised? No, no, I’m not.

Once my laments are lamented, I remember how small and finite I am. Very small. Very finite. And I remember His eternality. His grace upon grace upon grace. His outdoing but never outdone-ness.

And when my selective amnesia clears I know, “Where sin abounds, grace does much more.” So much more! (Romans 5:20)

My Redeemer lives!
