Shine Bright

I love decorating my Christmas tree every year. I have many ornaments on my tree that have history. They are nostalgic. But putting up the Christmas tree always takes the longest out of all my decorating. It’s an artificial tree, so I have to get it out of the attic, set it up, straighten the branches, wrap the lights around the branches, then place all the ornaments. Finally the moment comes to plug in the tree.

Light!

I love how it lights up my living room. I love to drive by my house and see it through the front windows.

I got to thinking, as Christians, we are like Christmas trees. When we allow Christ to shine in our hearts, we are a light to the world around us. We should light up our homes, our neighborhoods, our businesses, our communities. But our spiritual “trees” need care. So what do we need to do in order to shine bright? First, we must straighten our branches. Confess and repent of sin. We must continually deal with the crooked branches of sin in our lives by allowing the cleansing blood of Christ wash over us. Then we must allow Christ’s light and glory to entangle every branch of our trees.

What ornaments do we decorate with? No need to go to Hobby Lobby. We can pick up our ornaments straight from God’s Word. Now that’s better than a Black Friday deal!

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Colossians 3:12, 14

Put on beautiful ornaments of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience. Then wrap them in the garland of love.

Finally, the last part of 2 Corinthians 4:6 says that the light of God’s glory is displayed in the face of Christ. So how do we get our lights to shine bright?

Plug into Him!

Get in His presence. Seek His face. Spend time with Him. Did you know that you will become like the people you hang out with? The more you hang out with somebody, the more you will act like them. If you hang out with the world, you’ll start to look like the world. If you hang around your Heavenly daddy, you’ll start looking like Him.

We become what we behold.

And you know what else is cool about our spiritual Christmas trees? We don’t have to get them out of the attic only at Christmas time. We can leave them up all year long! 🎄

May your trees shine bright, my friends!

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
