God exalted David to his position as king over Israel for a purpose. But it wasn’t for David’s sake—for David to be “The Big Cheese.” God exalted David as king for the sake of His people Israel. God loved His people. He gave David to them as their king to be a blessing to them, and to rule over them with love and justice.
When God exalts us to positions, when He gives us certain gifts or talents, it is not for our sakes. It is for the sake of others. It’s not to edify ourselves so we get all the glory. It’s to edify others, to love them, show them mercy and grace. To bless them. And ultimately to point them to Him.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16
I love the first part of that verse. “Then David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel…” I think that’s the key when it comes to the positions God has placed us in. We must remember Who put us there. All that we have and all that we are come from Him. We are nothing apart from Him (John 15:5).
So what position has the Lord put you in? Maybe you have a position at work, church, or home. He has placed you there for a purpose. And it’s for the sake of those around you.
Use what you have and where you are to point others to Him!
