Abounding in Love-God’s Character

By Kelley Darnell

“Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, ‘the Lord God, compassionate, and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in love and truth, who keeps love for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgressions and sin….'”    Exodus 34:6-7

In Exodus 33:18, Moses had asked to see God’s glory.

What is God’s glory??

His glory is His character, His nature, His way of relating to His creatures. God didn’t give Moses a vision and majesty, but rather His LOVE! God’s glory is revealed in His mercy, grace, compassion, faithfulness, forgiveness, and justice. God’s love and mercy given to us can be used through our lives. We can share His love, and in return, He gets the glory and others can see and experience God’s glory!!

Wow! What amazing Lord we serve!!
I love to see God’s character throughout scripture. I love how He gives us a perfect role model. He is our ultimate and perfect Father! Abba Father!
So relating back to myself and my journey to be more like Him and less like myself, I have to have the 3 characteristics He showed to Moses in verse 6.

He is:
COMPASSIONATE
SLOW TO ANGER
ABOUNDING IN LOVE & TRUTH

Whoa! I don’t know if I can do that!

I’m a stay-at-home momma, so these characteristics seem super hard at times! Especially when it’s time for daddy to come home. Anyone know what I’m saying!??
I’ve been with these precious children all day and been just about every profession known to man–all in eight hours. My husband comes home, and I tend to think, “Thank God! You’ve got to take them! You’ve got to help me!”  lol

Anyone!?

Well bless his heart! He’s been working all day and he is just as tired! I forget that he’s out there in this crazy world working so hard to provide for us.
The Lord is quick to put me in my place!
I lack compassion. I need to be more compassionate!! I need to be my husband’s biggest fan!

Same for my children! I have four children and I love them with all my heart! But sometimes they can push me to places I don’t want to go! Sometimes they can just be down right mean and ugly.
And sometimes I react all wrong! I can be selfish, angry, and sometimes just plain mad at them!
But then He’s there again reminding me….
Be compassionate, slow to anger, and abound in love!

See the Lord does the same for you and me!!
He is compassionate, slow to anger, and abounding in love!!

Claim that today and rest in that!! Oh, how He loves us!!

  1. Thank you so much Kelly for this lesson! I needed to hear that part about be compassionate, slow to get angry, and abounding in love! I have been amazed lately at how frustrated and upset I can get with my son. I don’t like when he tests me or when he screams for no reason at all. I don’t like when he can eat but Mommy can’t because he wants my undivided attention all to himself. I am trying to work with him on all of these issues but I am not always slow to get angry or very compassionate sometimes. Then when I blow it I am so upset with myself and my wrong attitude. It breaks my heart. I needed something to remind me today when my frustration is mounting to be compassionate, slow to anger, and abounding in love! Thank u for your honesty as well! It is always an encouragement to know you are not alone in the struggle:)
