I was thinking about a Billy Graham crusade I went to years ago. The football stadium was packed. People were there from all kinds of different churches, denominations, languages, and backgrounds. I remember listening to him preach with such power. It was incredibly moving and emotional.
But as I listened, I thought about how simple his message really was. He didn’t use big eloquent words. He didn’t entertain or tell moving stories.
He just preached about Jesus.
Over and over again I heard His name–Jesus. Jesus was in the title. Jesus encompassed the main points. Jesus was the conclusion. And when Rev. Graham gave the invitation at the end, floods of people left their seats and went forward to be saved. Hundreds upon hundreds filled the football field.
Jesus said: “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” John 12:32
“That at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord.” Philippians 2:10-11
Jesus was always the central focus of Paul’s message.
“When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.”Acts 18:5
Paul devoted himself to exclusively preach what?
That Jesus was the Messiah!
My friend shared a beautiful story about a lady in her Bible study who is a new Christian and growing in her faith. The lady had shared that sometimes she’s intimidated when she’s around people who seem to know deep truths in scripture.
But then she shared her message–
She will be going to her court hearing soon. She will get to share the effect that her recovery program has had on her. She feels like the Lord has put it on her heart to share this truth with them.
She has come to the realization that it was her blood alcohol level that condemned her and found her guilty.
And it was the pure and blameless blood of Jesus Christ that has set her free!
Wow! What a testimony! What a message! It doesn’t get more deep, more powerful, or any better than that!
No matter our message, we cannot forget that Jesus must be the core!
Without Jesus we don’t have a message!
Paul said: “And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” 1 Corinthians 2:1-2
He WAS the message! He IS the message!!! And He is OUR message! There is such power in the name of Jesus! When we have Him, He is all we need!
