Have You Been Praying?

My husband and I went through a really rough patch in the first few years of our marriage. I was finding fault in Skip and was critical of just about everything he did. Then one day as I was doing my devotional, this question came to my mind, ‘Rachel, have you been praying for your marriage?’

The answer to that was no.

I realized that if I wanted to see changes in my husband and marriage, I needed to get down to business with God and start praying.

We got marriage counseling from a very dear Godly couple. During counseling, Mrs. Terry showed me her prayer journal. It was full of scriptures that she prayed daily over her husband and children. She graciously let me steal some of her verses to pray over my own marriage. I have added many more verses to my prayer list through the years.

It was only when I started to pray that my marriage began to change.

I try to stay out of politics for the most part. Honestly, I don’t watch the news very often because of how negative and depressing it is.  But I am very concerned with the lack of respect that the people in this country have for our leaders.

There has got to be a better way than constantly tearing people down and running them through the mud. We are better than this. We have strong opinions about the direction we think our country should be going. We are critical. We are so quick to find fault. But let me ask a few questions:

Have we been praying for our country?

Are we praying for our president and leaders?

I personally have been very convicted about praying for President Trump and our country. Before I state my opinion or make a judgment call about what I think our leaders should or should not be doing, I better first get on my knees before God and pray for them.

Change in this country will not come from marches, petitions, or protests. True and lasting change will only come from God through the power of prayer.

Our president and leaders need our prayers. Daily. Continually. They need the Lord to give them wisdom. I cannot imagine the magnitude of stress and pressure of leading a country, especially one as divided as ours.

We seem to have forgotten where our hope lies. Our hope will never come in the form of a president. Our hope will only come from faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. He is our hope.

He is the hope of glory!

“To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Colossians 1:27

We are so quick to state our rights and opinions on heated issues. But Matthew 6:10 tells us to pray, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

Maybe we should be spend more time seeking God’s will than defending our own rights.

There’s something I didn’t tell you.

When I started to pray for Skip and our marriage, God began to change our marriage alright–He began to change me. See, Skip wasn’t the only one causing problems in our marriage. I was a big part of the problem too.

Prayer doesn’t just change the world around us. Prayer changes us.

And I would venture to say that WE are also a big part of the problem in this country. We are pointing the finger over there at THEM. But maybe we should be taking a deeper look inside of ourselves. Often before God changes them, He changes us

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

I believe that there is great hope for our country. But that hope is not found in a president. Hope can only be found in our great and powerful God. And we have the great privilege and honor to access that great Power through prayer.

Want to see change in our country?

Then let’s get on our knees and start praying.

Here are some verses that I have turned into prayers. I am going to use them to pray for our country, our president, and leaders. Feel free to use them if you want to.

Lord, 1 Timothy 2:1-2 tells us that petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving should be made for all people-for kings and all those in authority, so I want to pray for President Trump and all of our country’s leaders today.

Help me to show proper respect to everyone, to love the family of believers, to fear God, and honor our leaders and those in authority as it says in 1 Pater 2:17.

Help us all to be subject to the governing authorities, for as it says in Romans 13:1, there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by You, Lord.

Lord, please help our president and leaders to be wise and to serve the LORD with fear and celebrate their rule with trembling, Psalm 2:10-11.

Lord, it says in Proverbs 11:14 that for lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers. Please give wisdom and guidance to our president. Surround him with Godly influences, Sprit-filled men and women with Godly wisdom, who will help him lead our nation in a Godly direction.

In Proverbs 21:1 it says that the king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; You turn it wherever You will. May our president’s heart be moldable, tender, and teachable. May he allow Your hand to have complete control of his heart to turn it wherever You will.

Lord, may Your word be a lamp for our president’s feet and a light for his path. May Your Holy Word be his guide and roadmap for every decision he makes, Psalm 119:105.

Lord, protect our president, our leaders, and their families from harm. May your angels encamp about them, deliver them, and keep them safe. Psalm 34:7

As it says in Job 12:23-25, Lord, You are the One Who makes nations great, and also destroys them. You enlarge nations, and disperse them. Please make our nation great again. May we be a nation who honors You above all else. A nation whose God is the Lord.

In 2 Chronicles 7:14 is says, if Your people, who are called by Your name, will humble themselves and pray and seek Your face, Lord, and turn from our wicked ways, then You will hear from heaven, and You will forgive our sins and will heal our land. Lord, help us to humble ourselves and down to business with You in our lives. Help us to take prayer seriously. Help us to seek Your will above our rights.

Lord, I pray that President Trump and our leaders would bow their knees in full surrender to Your Son, Jesus Christ. That they will stand up, fully devoted followers of Christ, men after Your own heart. That their families would be different because they lead them to the things of God. That they would be close to You, daily reading and obeying Your Word. That America would be a nation that honors You because their hearts would fully belong to You, Lord. ~Prayer adapted from Craig Groeschel

I am attaching incredibly powerful sermon by Pastor Carter Conlon called, “Escaping the Yoke of the Swindler.” If you get a chance to listen, please do. It is worth every second of your time.
